Division K received 1,054 paper submissions and 249 symposia session proposals—more than last year! This year’s program will consist of 520 accepted papers/posters and 180 symposia sessions that advance the field in areas of long-term and persistent problems in research and practice in teaching and teacher education.
Leveraging Educational Equity and Excellence Through In-Service Teacher Education: Lessons From an International Study of Teaching Policy

This symposium presents findings from the International Study of Teaching Policy, a two year research project producing a comprehensive description of the policies and practices related to teaching quality used by jurisdictions that have highly developed systems of support for teachers and teaching: Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Shanghai, Finland, and Singapore.
The study offers lessons on teaching policies from multiple cultural, linguistic, and heritage contexts that have evidence of simultaneously addressing excellence and equity. In significant ways, over time, the jurisdictions studied have “changed their worlds” in the direction of opportunity and access to excellence for all.

Last year, the Division K Business meeting was over-flowing—there were over 170 of us in the room (wow)! Let’s top that record with this year’s meeting and keep the intellectual fires burning. I have much to report about changes made and more changes envisioned, and I look forward to hearing from you as we extend the conversations we began in 2014. The recent times of education remain confusing and very challenging for all teachers and teacher educators, so our collective work, thinking, actions, matter more than ever. I’ll be expecting you and your ideas, your energy, and your support.

Teacher Education and Social Justice: Perspectives, Experiences, and Challenges From Different Global Contexts

The symposium brings together a team of teacher educators from four different continents, to analyze if and how research and praxis contribute to social justice agendas in education. We also look at how this work resonates or clashes with the often contested cultural, educational and social heritages of our respective multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi–linguistic societies. Key questions include: how do we prepare student teachers to teach the diversity of learners found in schools today? What should teacher educators know and be able to do in order to prepare all pre-service students, from differing socio-economic, cultural, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds? How do we prepare student teachers to work with the most socially disadvantaged learners in today’s school systems?
