On June 28, AERA and other professional organizations issued a letter to the Office of Management and Budget expressing concern about a recently offered amendment that could inhibit the ability to conduct demographic surveys with federal grant funds.

Congressman Scott Tipton (R-CO) recently offered an amendment to the FY 2013 Energy and Water appropriations act that would prohibit agencies covered under the legislation from funding surveys in which money is included or provided for the benefit of the responder. The amendment passed the House, sparking concern that introduction of similar amendments to legislation would affect modest incentives offered in other federal surveys.
