Welcome to the Second Language Research Special Interest Group (L2 SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Scholars in our SIG employ a range of methodologies and theoretical frameworks to examine issues of second language and bi-/multi-lingual learning, acquisition, and development in both classroom and out-of-school contexts, from early childhood through adulthood, in the United States and around the world. We also focus on issues of language education in terms of teacher preparation and instructional practice, as well as language policy and implementation.

Our SIG offers a variety of annual programs and awards of interest to the AERA community. Every year, we have an exiting program of symposia, paper sessions, roundtables, and posters, as well as a business meeting at AERA. In addition, we offer three annual awards: the Second Language Leadership Through Research Award, the Mid-Career Award, and the Outstanding Dissertation Award. Beginning in 2016, we also started a mentoring program for graduate students and early career scholars. Year-round, our listserv provides an important venue for SIG members to learn about calls for submissions and proposals, job opening, important news, and other timely communication. There are also many opportunities for leadership and service in the SIG, through volunteering to review proposals or awards applications, acting as a discussant or chair of a SIG session, or serving as an elected or appointed officer.

We look forward to having you as part of our community!
