Winter 2016 Message from the Vice President
Kadriye Ercikan [email protected]
Dear Division D Members,
The annual meeting in Washington DC is less than six weeks away. Our program committee has been working hard and has organized a very interesting conference program. You can find some highlights of the program in this Newsletter. In this note I am providing a report on some of the AERA activities and highlights of the upcoming annual conference.
The annual meeting is not only a great setting for disseminating our own research, it also provides opportunities to learn from others’ research and engage in discussions with colleagues from different perspectives in other Divisions and SIGs. Remember to take the opportunity to combine academic engagements at the AERA annual meeting with the networking opportunities provided by the three social receptions and the Luncheon and Business meeting. This year, our receptions will be hosted by our International and Mentoring Committees. We will also have our joint reception with NCME. Please check this Newsletter and the official program for details.
This is a special year for AERA which is celebrating its accomplishments during the last hundred years since its foundation in 1916. In the coming weeks and months you will continue to hear about the AERA’s Centennial Project. The plans include activities and opportunities related to history, programming, and development.
Some of the activities related to history will include creation of an AERA Fact Book, commissioning of books, publications of past presidents’ addresses, special issues of journals on the intellectual history of the organization, and interviews with key persons in the field.
With regard to programming, the annual meeting will have special sessions and features. Lectures/symposia at meetings of other fields/disciplines are being planned, as well as the Washington policy forum series, a travelling exhibit, and a history portal.
Development activities will include fundraising, establishment of the Congressional Fellowship Program, expansion of the virtual education research training center, and establishment of the visiting scholars program. You can find more details about each of these at http://www.aera.net/EducationResearch/AERACentennial/tabid/15928/Default.aspx.
As part of the Centennial program, in Division D we have chosen to highlight some issues in the annual meeting program through three invited sessions. These sessions will focus on (1) a historical look at the contributions of AERA, APA, NCME and ITC; (2) equity and fairness in the 21st century; and (3) educating researchers for methodological diversity.
As in previous years, we will be sending out a separate electronic Division D program so that members can look for the Division sessions more easily. Look for this in your emails in the coming weeks.
See you in Washington DC!
