Chaired by Kristen L. Buras (Georgia State University), presenters—Michael W. Apple (University of Wisconsin - Madison), Kristen L. Buras (Georgia State University), V. P. Franklin (University of California - Riverside), Pauline Lipman (University of Illinois at Chicago), Theresa Perry (Simmons College), Ibrahima Seck (Université Cheikh Anta Diop), David O. Stovall (University of Illinois at Chicago), Terrenda Corisa White (University of Colorado-Boulder), and Kofi Lomotey (Western Carolina University)—will address the question, whose interests have been served by market-based reform in urban communities, and the trend towards education privatization and collectively consider how these reforms have affected public schools and neighborhoods in cities nationwide.

Mike Honda (U.S. Congress), Alan Parker (Te Whare Wanaga o Awanuiarangi), Robert Miller (Arizona State University), Valerie Ooka Pang (San Diego State University), Iva E. Carruthers (Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, Inc.), Julian Vasquez Heilig (California State University - Sacramento), Cirecie West-Olatunji (University of Cincinnati), Curtis Acosta (Acosta Latino Learning Partnership), Stan Willis (Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights), (The Rochester Teachers Center), Jesse Hagopian (Seattle Public Schools), and Malik Burnett, (Drug Policy Alliance)—will examine the intersectionality of struggles for justice across diverse communities. 
 
 
The White House Initiatives on Educational Excellence for Diverse Groups

Chaired by Linda C. Tillman (University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill), presenters—Alfredo J. Artiles (Arizona State University), Sedika Franklin (White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Khaliah Harris (Commissioner), Dee Jay Mailer (Commissioner), and Bill Mendoza (Commissioner)—will focus on the role that their respective White House Initiatives play in shaping public policy for communities of color. 


LGBTQ Issues in Education: Advancing a Research Agenda: An AERA Publication

This session will be followed by a roundtable discussion from 4:05 to 5:35 p.m.
Chaired by William G. Tierney (2013 AERA President), editor George L. Wimberly (AERA) and contributors Kristen A. Renn (Michigan State University) and Madelaine Adelman (Arizona State University) will speak about this new AERA publication and its examination of the current state of the knowledge on LGBTQ issues in education, and address future research directions.
 

Transforming Research: The Indigenous Struggle for Social, Cultural, and Economic Justice Within and Through Education

Session will also be live-streamed

Chaired by Tanya L.M. Samu (University of Auckland), presenter Graham Hingangaroa Smith (Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi) and discussant Jonathan D. Jansen (University of the Free State) will examine the struggle to change educational outcomes for indigenous and disadvantaged communities. 


If Black Lives Matter, What Is to Be Done? Is There a Role for Research?

In an interactive town hall session chaired by Christopher Edley, Jr. (University of California - Berkeley), an interdisciplinary panel of scholars—Sandra Graham (University of California, Los Angeles), Wayne Au (University of Washington - Bothell), and Mary Pattillo (Northwestern University)—will be joined by the attorney for the family of Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin—Daryl Parks (Parks & Crump)—to consider research, policy, and education interventions to address the institutionally-sanctioned state violence that youth are experiencing in the U.S. and globally.


Advancing Education Research at the National Science Foundation
12:25 to 1:55 p.m.
Hyatt, East Tower - Gold Level - Columbus CD

Chaired by Deborah Loewenberg Ball (University of Michigan), presenting speaker Joan Ferrini-Mundy (Education and Human Resources Directorate at the NSF) and discussants Camilla P. Benbow (Vanderbilt University) and Robert M. Hauser (National Research Council) will engage in a dialogue about the complexities and opportunities related to advancing education research at the National Science Foundation.
