2016 Award Recipient
Eve Manz Boston University "Representing Student Argumentation as Functionally Emergent From Scientific Activity." Review of Educational Research, December, 553–590.
Dr. Eve Manz offers a well-researched and thoughtfully presented examination of how argumentation has been used to foster student learning in the study of science and science education. Drawing on developmental psychology and the learning sciences, as well as anthropology and the sociology of science, Dr. Manz examines the contexts in which scientists and students engage in argumentation. Her analysis reveals that how scientists and students enact argumentation matters, both for helping students learn to argue and for argumentation as a way of learning. In the process, she skillfully tackles a complex subject of growing significance in research and practice. The committee’s view is that this work will be very useful in current and future debates about STEM learning and teaching, as well as about teaching critical thinking in general.
This award is given in recognition of an outstanding review of research article appearing in the Review of Research in Education and the Review of Educational Research.
