Description
Established in 2006, the Distinguished Contributions to Gender Equity in Education Research Award recognizes individuals within AERA for distinguished research, professional practice, and activities that advance public understanding of gender and/ or sexuality at any level in the education community. This award will be presented to an individual whose professional career has been devoted in substantial part to the study of gender and/or sexuality in education, and who has significantly advanced the field through extraordinary leadership, scholarship, or profes­sional practice.

Letters of nomination for this award should include a spe­cific description of the nominee’s contributions and impact through scholarship and professional practice in advancing the study of gender and/or sexuality in education. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nominees must be AERA members at the time of nomination. Nominations must include a detailed letter outlining the basis for the nomination, including a description of the research and prac­tice that demonstrates how the candidate is uniquely qualified to receive this award, and any additional supporting materials. The AERA Committee on Scholars and Advocates for Gender Equity in Education will review all nominations for consideration. 

Selection/Eligibility Criteria
This award recognizes individuals within the organization for distinguished research, professional practice, and activities that advances public understanding of gender and/or sexuality at any level within the education community. This award will be presented to an individual whose professional career has been devoted in substantial part to the study of gender and/or sexuality in education, and who has significantly advanced the field through extraordinary leadership through scholarship, or professional practice. 

Nomination Process
The SAGE Committee will solicit letters of nomination through announcements in its journals, on various listservs and through other appropriate venues. The Committee will also generate nominations from colleagues and direct contact with potential awardees. Nominations will normally close by the date in early November which AERA has selected as the deadline for other award nominations. Letters of nomination for this award will include a specific description of the nominee's contributions and impact through scholarship, and professional practice in advancing the study of gender and/or sexuality in education. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nominees must be AERA members at the time of nomination.

Nominations should include seven copies of a detailed letter outlining the basis for the nomination, including a description of the research and practice that demonstrates how the candidate is uniquely qualified to receive this award, and other supporting materials. 

Review/Selection Process
The entire SAGE committee will review all candidates for consideration. The SAGE committee will decide upon a ranked list of at least two candidates. It will make the final selection of the awardee by a majority vote of the committee no later than the end of the calendar year preceding the year the award is to be conferred. 

Form of Recognition
An AERA plaque presented at the AERA awards ceremony with a short talk given at the Scholars of Color Breakfast Meeting.

James L. Moore III
The Ohio State University

Dr. James L. Moore has played a significant role in advancing scientific knowledge on topics related to Black males, education, culture, and social behavior and has met and connected with researchers and practitioners from various disciplines and settings. He is both nationally and internationally known for his scholarship and research in urban education, school counseling, multicultural education/ counseling, gifted education, STEM education, and higher education. Further, Dr. Moore is passionate about working to remove nonacademic barriers for urban learners and improving education and career outcomes for African American males.

Established in 2006, the Distinguished Contributions to Gender Equity in Education Research Award recognizes individuals within AERA for distinguished research, professional practice, and activities that advance public understanding of gender and/ or sexuality at any level in the education community. This award will be presented to an individual whose professional career has been devoted in substantial part to the study of gender and/or sexuality in education, and who has significantly advanced the field through extraordinary leadership, scholarship, or professional practice.
