Four Scholarly Societies in Social and Behavioral Sciences Comment on Next Generation Science Standards
This month AERA, in collaboration with the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences, the American Psychological Association, and the Society for Research in Child Development, submitted a joint statement responding to a call from Achieve for comments on the first draft of its Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for K–12 education. AERA, along with over 50 other associations in science, engineering, and higher education, has signed letters to both houses of Congress protesting recent amendments that could restrict the number of conferences that government employees can attend. Read more

AERA Joins Efforts to Protect NSF Peer Review in Face of Congressional Actions Targeting Political Science
On May 17, on behalf of AERA and other member organizations the Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA) urged the Senate not to act on a provision similar to one that recently passed the House of Representatives, prohibiting funding for the National Science Foundation’s Political Science Program. On May 24, more than 100 persons from research and scientific associations, federal agencies, private foundations, and colleges and universities convened for a workshop to examine ways to improve diversity in science fields. Read more

In an innovative partnership, three education organizations joined forces to extend communications about education and education research in the national media. NRC Report Explores Benefits of Discipline-Based Education Research for Undergraduate Learning in Science and Engineering
On May 21, the National Research Council released Discipline-Based Education Research: Understanding and Improving Learning in Undergraduate Science and Engineering, a report that provides a synthesis of current education research in physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, the geosciences, and astronomy and examines its influence on teaching and learning in those fields. The AERA Grants Program is currently accepting proposals for research grants and dissertation grants.
